When we hear about skin blemishes we are all more or less aware of what they are. There is no man or woman who in the course of his life has not had to deal with acne, blackheads, leeks, cellulite, stretch marks, wrinkles, skin spots, bags, dark circles, etc. The blemishes of the skin, face and body, represent all that series of skin imperfections, of which we are sometimes ashamed, which we try to fight thanks to the means made available by the cosmetic industry and aesthetic medicine. Beautiful skin can be the result of good genetics, but it is an ephemeral good that must be preserved. Nothing lasts forever, especially if we don't adopt a healthy lifestyle and diet from an early age, away from stress, smoking, excessive sun exposure and junk food. The skin, the largest organ of our body, is much more than a simple protective shell: it allows us to interact with the outside world and is a reflection of who we are and how we live. But how do you treat skin blemishes? Continue reading this simple and short article to find out together which are the most common skin blemishes and how to cure them.

Skin blemishes: diet and lifestyle advice

Skin blemishes can appear suddenly, following an external insult (eg. cold, UV rays), or due to a hormonal disorder (e.g. acne) or lymphatic and blood circulation defects (eg. cellulite). More often they are simply a consequence of the natural aging process (eg. wrinkles, sagging skin), or characterize a phase of our life such as pregnancy or adolescence. As already mentioned, to prevent and treat skin blemishes we must first of all start from a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet which include:

  • regular physical activity (at least 2:30 hours from distributed throughout the week);
  • giving up bad habits such as smoking and excess alcohol;
  • sleeping 7-9 hours a night ;
  • avoid both physical and mental stress;
  • follow a rich and varied diet that includes fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish , extra virgin olive oil, dried fruit (30 g per day) rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins, mineral salts and polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega 3). On the other hand, let's avoid junk food, sweets, fried foods, an excess of cured meats and other animal derivatives, as well as an excess of sodium and sugars in general;
  • Drink at least 1, 5 liters of water a day: proper hydration of the skin starts from within;
  • Use sunscreen in both summer and winter, avoiding wild tanning and UV lamps.

How to treat skin blemishes with cosmetic products

Combined with advice on lifestyle and nutrition, to treat face and body, which do not require particular medical interventions, we can resort to the use of targeted cosmetic products. In some cases, skin blemishes can in fact be removed permanently only through treatments that can be performed by professionals in the dermo-cosmetic sector or by administering appropriate pharmacological therapies. In the next paragraphs we will see which are the most feared skin blemishes by men and women and the most suitable cosmetic products to treat them.

Face skin blemishes: acne, pimples and blackheads

Acne is perhaps the first blemish that comes to mind when we think of skin of a teenager's face. However, it can also affect other parts of the body such as the chest and shoulders and also occur in adulthood. Behind the unsightly pimples, papules, comedones (skin blemishes, better known as blackheads, often antechamber of acne itself), cysts there is an inflammation of the pilosebaceous glands used for the production of sebum. Acne is commonly caused by: altered sebaceous production, altered keratinization, hormonal imbalances, Propriumbacterium acneis infections, genetic predisposition or use of cosmetics containing comedogenic substances such as petrolatum.

Cosmetic products for the treatment of acne such as creams, gels and detergents aim at a dermopuripicant, sebum normalizing, astringent, anti-reddening action. In the INCI of these products we will usually find: antibacterials (essential oils, benzoyl peroxide, etc. ); trans retinoic acid (or isotretionine, derivative of vitamin A, with exfoliating action); keratolytics and keratoplastics such as urea, allantoin, lactic acid, glycolic acid, sulfur; substances with an astringent and opacifying action such as zinc, bismuth oxychloride, aluminum salts; vitamins with a sebum-regulating action such as those of group B, vitamins A and E; plant extracts with dermopurifying and/or astringent activity such as Birch, Burdock, Hamamelis, Thyme, Sage.

Face skin imperfections: skin spots and wrinkles

Skin spots and wrinkles, on the contrary of acne and blackheads, are blemishes that typically mark a more mature stage of life for men and women. To lighten the skin and reduce brown spots caused by the sun, by aging, but also by acne itself, the most suitable cosmetic products are those containing: alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), vitamin C, hydroquinone, yarrow extracts, chamomile , kojic acid.

Wrinkles deserve a separate discussion, a manifestation of the gradual and inexorable general atrophy of the skin and the degradation of the elastic fibers, which occurs over the years due to the normal process of aging. However, even mature skin can be radiant and fresh if we start taking care of it from a very young age. For the prevention of wrinkles it will be necessary to opt for cosmetic products (creams, serums, lip and eye contour) with a moisturizing and antioxidant action containing ingredients such as: amino acids (PCA), reconstituted NMF, lactic acid, AHA, glycerin, propylene glycol, natural biopolymers such as collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, nucleic acids, chitin and its semi-synthetic derivatives (chitosans), vitamins (A, E, C), polyphenols, SOD, lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, etc.

Leg and body skin imperfections: cellulite and stretch marks

If facial imperfections do not know gender and age, a body marked by cellulite and stretch marks is a source of considerable discomfort, especially for women: all, young and old, thin or overweight, can present these two imperfections of the body partly due to hereditary and hormonal factors.

But let's go in order: the atrophic streaks first reddish, then pearly, called "stretch marks", are an indication of an abnormal breakage of the connective fibers and can appear following weight loss , pregnancy, breastfeeding or growing up. In the case of stretch marks it is very necessary to prevent rather than cure (over time they can lighten, but they never completely disappear). Anti-stretch mark cosmetic products will usually contain: emollient oils, such as almond oil itself to be used as it is (especially during breastfeeding and pregnancy), fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins (A, E, F, biotin, B), moisturizing and elasticizing agents such as amino acids and natural biopolymers (hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin), plant extracts (hops, ginseng, horsetail, escin, butcher's broom, hamamelis, echinacea), etc.

Cellulite or "orange peel" or "mattress" skin is a common blemish that affects the skin of the legs, buttocks, but also the stomach and arms. The causes of cellulite are many, but basically there is an alteration of the circulation and permeability of the peripheral venous and lymphatic vessels which leads to stagnation of liquids with the formation of edema and damage to the adipocytes (the cells responsible for the reserve of fat) which are no longer able to carry out nutrient exchanges with the capillaries. The aggravation of cellulite will lead to a degeneration of the elastic and collagen fibers and the progressive sclerotization of the fundamental substance and therefore the formation of more or less visible nodules under the skin and more or less painful to the touch. The treatments against cellulite imperfections include a vast range of products including: creams, gels, anti-cellulite muds, anti-cellulite oils, FIR technology garments, anti-cellulite cups.
